Moving Day Checklist for Rockville and Montgomery County
A do-it-yourself move saves money, but only if the day goes smoothly. This checklist covers the things that most often cause trouble on moving day, from the weeks before to returning the rental.
Two to three weeks before
- Book your trailer or van. Weekends and the end of the month are the busiest times for moves, so reserve early.
- Measure your biggest items: sofas, mattresses, dressers. Make sure they'll fit through doorways and into the vehicle.
- Line up help. Two people can move a small apartment. More help makes a bigger place go much faster.
- Check building rules. Apartments and condos often require you to reserve an elevator or loading area. Ask both your old and new building management, and your HOA if you have one.
The week before
- Collect supplies: boxes, tape, markers, furniture pads or blankets, stretch wrap, and ratchet straps or rope.
- Pack room by room, and label each box with its room and contents.
- Take apart bed frames and tables. Keep screws in a labeled bag taped to the furniture.
- Pack a "first night" box: chargers, medications, toiletries, sheets, a few tools, and snacks.
Moving day
- Pick up on time with your driver's license.
- Load heavy items first, against the front wall, and put lighter boxes on top.
- Fill gaps so nothing shifts, and strap tall items to the side walls or tie-down points.
- Plan your route. Allow extra time for traffic on I-270, the Beltway, and Rockville Pike, especially at rush hour.
Returning the rental
- Sweep out the cargo area and remove all your belongings, including blankets and straps.
- Refuel the van to the level it had at pickup.
- Return by your scheduled time. There's a 59-minute grace period, and after that late charges apply.
